Choose an Outline or a Filled Motif for Your Nail Design
Compare an outlined nail motif with a filled version, identify the base you want visible inside, and describe that preference for your appointment.

A heart drawn as a border and a heart filled with color share the same shape, but they leave different parts of the base visible. If you like a design with open-looking areas, point to what happens inside the motif. That detail can be more useful than asking for “something minimal.”
Look inside the shape
Choose one recognizable motif, such as a heart, circle or diamond. In an outlined version, a line marks its edge while the base remains visible in the center. In a filled version, the motif's color occupies that center too.
“Open-looking” describes the appearance. It does not establish whether the nail underneath is bare, coated with a clear product or covered in a base color. Use your reference to explain the visible result, and discuss the application with your nail artist.
Compare two versions of one motif
Draw two hearts of approximately the same size on paper. Outline the first and fill the second. Keep their color, position and outer shape alike so the main difference is the interior. Then consider:
- Do you want to see the base color inside the heart?
- Do you prefer a fine border or a more noticeable line?
- Would you like the heart to read as a solid patch of color?
These are personal design choices. There is no required answer, and an outlined motif can still have a bold border. If you compare a tiny outline with a much larger filled heart, note that you are changing size as well as fill.
Use a photograph to identify the detail
The YLG cover photograph shows gold-colored decorations over a pink-toned base. One heart has a gold outline with the pink area visible inside it. Pointing to that interior makes the preference specific: “I like seeing the pink through the center of this shape.”
The photo also includes other decorations. You can select the outlined heart as your reference without requesting every surrounding mark. The visible gold color does not identify the product or technique used.
Write the preference in one sentence
For an outline, try: “I would like a heart with a defined border and the base visible inside; let's compare the border thickness before settling on the design.” For a filled motif: “I prefer the heart's center filled with the accent color rather than showing the base.”
Add the selected version to your nail design brief. Review the YLG service catalog, confirm the appropriate booking option for your idea, and reserve your visit.
